The Bend Police Department is currently recruiting for one (1) regular, full-time Property and Evidence Technician.
This position is represented by the Bend Police Association and is FLSA non-exempt (overtime eligible).
As a Property & Evidence Technician you will get a chance to engage in fascinating assignments, tackle specialized duties, and contribute to the safekeeping of property and evidence.

Position Overview This position is primarily tasked with completing and assisting with high-level assignments within the scope of the program including a variety of complex, specialized duties in support of Bend Police Department operations.
Under general supervision, this position performs a wide range of duties to coordinate safekeeping of property and evidence and ensure department goals and objectives are met.
Responsible for the property and evidence activities of the department.
Distinguishing Characteristics Distinguished from the Evidence Program Specialist Lead:
The Lead performs advanced journey-level functions with responsibility for coordinating and scheduling specialist work, performing more complex duties, project coordination and ongoing lead worker responsibilities.

Provides assistance, resolves difficult interpretations, problems and customer service issues referred by specialists, trainees, officers, or other agencies.
Assist internal and external customers not limited to the Detective Unit, Command, and the District Attorney's Office on a case-by-case basis to resolve complex situations Analyzes and reviews federal, state, and local laws, regulations, policies, and procedures in order to ensure compliance; conducts analysis on best practices and trends and formulates recommendations.
Reviews and monitors the Records Management System to ensure accuracy and completeness in property entries; corrects deficiencies.
Facilitates special administrative projects as assigned by the Records and Evidence Manager.
Recommends, drafts and implements General Orders, procedures, and performance standards to assure efficient and effective operation of assigned activities in compliance with department guidelines.
Oversees maintenance of equipment and recommends modifications to existing computer programs.
Identifies and resolves technical and operational problems with computer systems and regional databases.
Receives, tags, and releases personal property and items of evidence in criminal cases.
Disposes of items according to written policy and procedure, laws, and court orders.
Responsible for all aspects of securing and processing property and evidence in accordance with applicable laws, rules and regulations.
Handles confidential and sensitive information on a regular basis.
Performs a variety of property-related administrative duties related to the collection and preservation of property and evidence.
Research and respond to property and evidence questions.
Conducts regular property room audits and inventory and coordinates the auctioning of unclaimed property.
Transport property and evidence to various local, state and federal agencies.
Maintains the chain of custody and provides security for evidence; signs items in/out and with proper authorizations; arranges for viewing and/or identification of property and evidence; verifies ownership and returns items to owners; notifies other agencies regarding recovered property.
Assists at crime scenes with logistical services and support including the transportation of equipment, supplies, and collected physical evidence; briefing and guidance related to evidence collection and packaging; and data entry of evidence item descriptions.
Completes and maintains a variety of documents, records, databases and reports required in the retrieval, storage and tracking of police evidence and property.
Review police reports and other sensitive documents.
Documents crime lab letters and detection numbers.
Confirms Right of Discovery for attorneys in accordance with applicable laws, rules and regulations.
Provides information to department staff regarding evidence and personal property within scope of authority.
Prepares property and evidence for disposition, including preparing and distributing officer disposition requests and contacting courts and district attorneys for case dispositions.
Researches cases to identify and notify property owners in accordance with applicable laws, rules and regulations.
Provides testimony in a courtroom setting as to the preservation of the chain of evidence.
Produces an acceptable quantity and quality of work that is completed within established timelines.
Supports and respects diversity in the workplace.
Performs reception and office support duties, such as answering phones, taking, and transmitting messages greeting and directing members of the public, maintaining clean and presentable office, scanning, collating, binding documents, faxing documents, making photocopies, sending and receiving of mail and packages and maintain paper and electronic filing.
